Range Officer Commands

ALL Range Officer commands must be Loud, Clear and Concise.

No programmed shooting match may be conducted on a SSAA SA Range unless a qualified Range Officer is present and has control of the firing line.

The Range Officer has the full and final authority and responsibility for the safe and efficient conduct of shooting on the Range. In relation to Safety matters the Range Officer has the power to expel any person or persons who do not obey all Range Rules or who jeopardise the safety of any person on the Range.

Range Officer Requirements

Setup to Packup

Range setup and packup is all a part of being an esteemed Range Officer. It is expected for setup (single day or first day of a weekend) that you would be onsite at 8:30am.

Setup

• Open our Container(s) and storage yard.

• Clubrooms - unlock and open, sign the register, turn water on, open curtains, electricity on, water pump on, UNLOCK outside toilet doors.

• Place 2 bags in centre of Ranges 2/3 and display sign in register: Bag 1 - RO vests/flags, range rules, Bag 2 - first aid, eye/ear protection. Locate the bucket of orange Chamber Flags alongside.

• There are 2 black Target/Stapler bags. Place them in the centre of Range 1 and Range 4.

• Place hand sanitiser by the Sign In register and on each Range.

• Equip each Range Officer with a UHF Radio.

• 4 red flags must be raised. 1 - drive in gate, 2 - Clubrooms gate, 3 - 200m mound, 4 - 500m mound.

• Locate all targets so that any projectile not stopped by steel is captured by a backstop or intermediate mound.

• Place targets in locations that minimize Shooters angling outside of the 200m or 500m flags.

• Move MMSHGC large shooting benches to rear of Range 4 (as required) and locate PSSA grey benches on firing line.

Throughout the day

• Check the IDs of ALL Visitors.

• ALL Shooters attending the range for the first time MUST be given a safety briefing and a copy of the Range Rules. Remember to show where the toilets are located.

• Range 1, Ranges 2/3, Range 4, must each have a Range Officer if they are occupied by Shooters.

• All Handgun targets must be engaged directly from the front and not at any angle, this is especially important when shooters are engaging the 10m paper targets. ROs to remain extra vigilent to ensure all projectiles are falling into the appropriate backstop. Handgun calibre Rifles may only be fired at 50 metre plus targets.

Access to the top of the 200 metre mound on Range 4 is not to occur unless Range 5 is unoccupied or communications have resulted in a Cease Fire on Range 5.

Junior Shooters on grounds of Shooting Club

• Juniors (minimum age - 10 years old to 17) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

• If a member: A B or H (all Firearms) - 10 years to 18 years of age. However they must be under the continuous supervision of a FSTI.

• If NOT a member: A (Air or .22 Rifle) or Air Handgun ONLY - 10 years to 14 years of age (must be under the continuous supervision of an appropriately Licenced person).

• If NOT a member: A B or H (all Firearms) - 14 years to 18 years of age (must be under the continuous supervision of an appropriately Licenced person).

Packup

It is expected that shooters will also help with packup under the direction of the Range Officer. Depending on helpers this takes 20 to 45 minutes.

• Remove ALL Firearms from Ranges 1 - 4 before Packup.

• Retrieve targets and flags. Persons are NOT permitted to ride on the trailer.

• Place all equipment neatly in Containers and Storage yard, close and LOCK them.

• Pickup ALL brass above .22 and any live rounds from ALL Ranges.

• Reposition MMSHGC large shooting benches on Range 4.

• Check that the toilets are clean, mopped, sterilized, and stocked with dunny paper.

• Sweep, vacuum, mop, sterilize the Clubrooms as required.

• Take the garbage with you and replace the garbage bag(s).

• Clubrooms - close windows and curtains, water pump off, electricity off, water off. LOCK outside toilet doors and Clubrooms main and screen door. After checking sign the register stating that all Ranges and the Clubrooms are secure.
